Silence & Singing, Shadow & Candlelight, Prayer & Reflection
Taizé worship is an ecumenical sung and silent prayer service designed to achieve a contemplative space through songs, Scripture, prayer, silence and candlelight. The music, which is contemplative in nature, emphasizes simple one or two line phrases usually from the Psalms, other passages of Scripture or liturgy. Short chants are repeated over and over again to give the service a contemplative atmosphere. The service includes a time of prayers. Taizé provides a time at the end of the day to relax from the stress of the day’s activities. It offers a time for worship and reflection, a time for calming the body and the mind. In the silence God’s word can reach the hidden corners of our hearts, and the light of Christ can reach, heal, and transform us. Join us as we experience this beautiful service!
To prepare a space to worship if you are not in the sanctuary, have candles to light; a cross, a piece of fabric, something from nature, a painting, a piece of pottery, or another object to visually define your “holy place.” Sing if you like, in whatever language you like, or be silent. Open your eyes and observe the worship environment, in the sanctuary or in your home, or close your eyes and imagine yourself somewhere else.
